How to crochet a tulip
You will need
- The Cotton One yarn (or any aran weight yarn)
- 4mm crochet hook
- A sewing needle
- A wooden dowel rod (20cm-30cm length)
- Hot glue gun
Abbreviations (US Terminology)
ch - chain
hdc - half double crochet (UK terms: htc - half treble crochet)
inc – single crochet twice in the same stitch, also known as an increase stitch
rep - repeat
sc – single crochet (UK terms: dc – double crochet)
ss – slip stitch
st(s) - stitch(es)
The pattern
Inner petal
Ch 4, join with ss.
The chain circle creates enough of a hole to pierce your tulip with the wooden cane for the stalk.
Round 1: 6 sc (UK dc) into the middle of the ch circle. (6 sts)

Round 2: rep *inc 2 sc * 2 times. (8 sts)
Round 3-6: sc in all sts. (8 sts)
Round 7: sc 6 times, dec. (7sts)
Round 8: sc 5 times, dec. (6sts)
Round 9: rep *ch2, 2 sc * 3 times. (6 sts, 6 ch)
Fasten off.
Outer petal
Ch 4, join with sl st.
The chain circle creates enough of a hole to pierce your tulip with the wooden cane for the stalk.
Round 1: 6 sc into the middle of the ch circle. (6 sts)
Round 2: inc in all sts. (12 sts)
Round 3: repeat *inc, 1 sc * 6 times. (18 sts)
Round 4-9: sc in all sts. (18 sts)
Round 10: rep *5 sc, dec* 3 times. (15 sts)
Round 11: sc in all sts. (15 sts)
When working the half double crochet stitches, you will link them together by using the center [centre] post to hold the second stitch to the first, this will help create a secure fabric.
Round 12: rep *hdc, ch2, linked hdc, ss* 5 times.
Fasten off.



Making up
Put some hot glue inside the inner tulip, push the stem cane through the middle hole, and wait for it to set. If you don’t have any hot glue, you can tie off the ends of the green yarn to the tulip inner to secure.

Once set, thread the end of the green yarn through the middle of the outer tulip, and hold to the inner tulip. Push the outer along the cane. Before pushing too far up, add some more glue around the base of the inner on the cane to secure both the green thread and the outer.

Wrap the cane with the green yarn and hot glue the end. And you’re done!
